You can close your eyes to reality, but not to memories. (2007)
This work is for a Piano Trio (Piano, Violin, Cello). Its title is an aphorism by Polish poet and aphorist, Stanislaw Jerzy Lec (March 6, 1909- May 7, 1966). Lec’s work was largely influenced by the tragedies and injustice he witnessed during WWII. He was imprisoned in a German concentration camp from the outbreak of the war until July of 1943, when the camp was liquidated and he managed to escape in a German uniform. Although themes of WWII and The Holocaust are undeniably connected to the title, this piece is not specifically about that subject matter. Rather than illustrating a historical event, the work strives to capture Lec’s more universal theme of haunting dreams and memories. You can close your eyes to reality but not to memories is an exploration of the fears, longing, and regrets that we all must face when our daily distractions have faded and our dreams take hold.
